Overview of this year’s conference:
The Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education at McGill University is hosting the 14th annual Eastern Canada Sport and Exercise Psychology Symposium (ECSEPS) between March 25th and 27th, 2010. The conference is designed to allow graduate students in sport, exercise, and health psychology an opportunity to present their completed work, proposed work, or work in progress. This year’s keynote speakers are Dr. Robert J. Vallerand, a social psychologist from Université du Québec à Montréal, and Peter Smith, head coach of the McGill University women’s hockey program and assistant coach for the 2010 Canadian Olympic women’s hockey team. There will also be an Olympic athlete panel that will be held following the bi-annual Canadian Sport Psychology Association workshop meeting. Be sure to register early and receive discounted hotel and registration fees. We look forward to seeing you in March!

Conference fees:
Conference fees will include access to all student presentations, Olympic athlete panel, CSPA workshop/meeting, both keynote addresses, and banquet dinner with open bar at the Molson Brewery.
Early registration (received cheque or money order prior to March 1st) is:
$80 for students
$125 for professionals

Dr. Robert J. Vallerand
Title of presentation: On Passion in Sport and Exercise: Theory, Research, and Application
Dr. Vallerand received his M.A. from McGill University and his Ph.D. from the Université de Montréal, and completed postdoctoral studies in Experimental Social Psychology at the University of Waterloo. He is presently Full Professor of Social Psychology and Director of the Laboratoire de Recherche sur le Comportement Social (add his website for his lab) in the Department of psychology at the Université du Québec à Montréal. Dr. Vallerand has written or edited 5 books and well over 200 articles and book chapters. He has given more than 300 scientific presentations and keynote addresses mainly in the area of social motivation. Dr. Vallerand has served as President of both the Canadian Psychological Association and the Quebec Society for Research in Psychology (SQRP). In addtion, Dr. Vallerand has received several honors, including being elected a member of the Society for Experimental Social Psychology, Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, and the Canadian Psychological Association. He has also received the Adrien Pinard Career Award from the SQRP and the Sport Science Award from the International Olympic Committee. Dr. Vallerand’s theoretical and research interests focus on the development of an integrative motivational model of human development, optimal functioning, and well-being across the lifespan.
Mr. Peter Smith
Title of presentation: Coaching Experiences on the Road to the Olympics
Peter Smith received his B.Ed and M.A. from McGill University before pursuing a highly decorated coaching career. An NCCP level 4 coach, he has been coaching for 16 years and was appointed head coach of the McGill University women’s hockey team in 1999. Mr. Smith guided the Martlets to a berth at the CIS national championship tournament in nine of the last ten seasons. He is the winningest women’s hockey coach in McGill history, and has led the Martlet’s to back to back CIS national championships with a 69-1 record over two years (2007-2009). He also has international coaching experience. Mr. Smith was the assistant coach for Canada’s National women’s team (2005, 2006, and 2007) and the 2006 Canadian Olympic women’s team . Mr. Smith has also held the position of head coach for the National women’s Under-22 Team (2004, 2005, and 2006) and National women’s team (2007, 2008). In addition to an Olympic Gold medal and several world titles, Mr. Smith is the recipient of two CIS coach of the year awards and five-time Quebec University coach of the year. Mr. Smith is also the current assistant coach for the 2010 Canadian Olympic women’s hockey team.

Oral Presentation Format:
Senior undergraduate students or graduate students are encouraged to present on the empirical findings of a completed research, proposed research, research in-progress, and/or applied practicum experiences in a sport, exercise or health environment. Each presentation will consist of 12 minute presentation plus 3 minutes for questions and answers. Speakers will be expected to use PowerPoint slides. The conference program committee will integrate sets of individual papers into thematic sessions of 60 minute duration. Submissions to present a presentation require an abstract in an obligatory format outlined below.
Guidelines for Abstract Submission:
- The abstract template must be used to make a submission. The template can be found when clicking on the “download abstract template” button below.
- When completing the downloaded template, please name the document as follows:
- surname_firstname_1.doc
- e.g. smith_john_1.doc
- If you are submitting more than one abstract under the same user name, the document number should change accordingly (e.g., smith_john_2.doc).
- When you have downloaded the template, please ensure your abstract adheres to the following font and style structure:
- The word limit per each abstract is 150 words. Submissions not meeting this requirement will not be accepted.
- Font used should be Times New Roman 12pt.
- Please ensure that all authors’ names (including supervisor) and organizations are included in your abstract. A submission that does not include the name of a professional who has supervised the research or consulting experience is unlikely to be accepted.
- All abstract submissions need to be in English.
- Abstracts should be submitted via email to ecseps2010@gmail.com
- Abstracts received after February 1, 2010 will not be accepted.
